Axenéo 7 artist centre,
Gatineau,  2004

This project is a temporary installation built on a vacant lot surrounding the Axenéo 7 artist centre in Hull. For this project, the exhibit’s director invited Mousse to reflect on the notion of vacant lot and to propose a project based on this theme.

Right away, an interesting parallel appeared between the artist centre’s former activity (a wool sock factory) and all the vocabulary related to textile. It is in this direction that we oriented our work and tried to symbolically mend this vacant lot which represented a hole in the city’s grid.

It is through the wool sock that we tried this symbolic reconstruction. Workshops taking place in the neighbourhood’s school were organized to present the project and to talk about the site. The students were then invited to exchange their old wool socks for new ones. We then used them to create a small habitat in the vacant lot. The socks were installed on a dome steel structure in the lot. This intervention facilitated the creation of a new bond between the neighbourhood’s residents and the vacant space.
