St-Clément School
Hochelaga,
Montreal, 2013
- Children and family, Urban
St-Clément School had contaminated soil in its yard and wanted to eliminate it. Furthermore, the yard had no green spaces and was in an urban heat island. This project had, as a mandate, to offer a safer and more stimulating yard for children and the neighbourhood population, and to reduce the exposure of the children to heat and UV rays. The creation of original and solid storage spaces was also important so that school personnel can have an easy access to materials for outdoor activities.
This project also includes the installation of an underground root cell system where the yard’s runoff water are directed, offering an optimal growth environment for the yard’s trees and capturing the water in the tree pit to nourish plants and be reabsorbed into the ground. The presence of this system enabled the accelerated growth of trees and the reduction of the water charge into the municipal sewer network
