Tortue Têtue Childcare Centre

Ville-Marie borough,
Montreal,  2017

This project shows how, even in a small space, it is possible to create a stimulating and fun environment for children. As the installation of a traditional playground was out of the question with such a restricted space, we developed another approach: that of having a space like any other room at the centre, open to the sky and outdoor elements.

The playground includes a sand and water zone where a manual pump is installed allowing children to manipulate it: to make water gush from the pump, the children must pump and the toddlers can be helped, which creates collaboration between kids of all ages. A creative game zone was also installed. This zone includes a wooden platform and a playhouse with a coloured roof. Children can let their imagination run free and observe the colours on the ground. Plants add life and beauty to the space. They are interesting to touch, and some can even be eaten. Finally, custom storage was also installed, which makes it easier for educators and provides an easy access to materials.
